Alley Cats Axe Throwing Co. opened this summer, and it is one new business that hits the bullseye in historic downtown Hattiesburg. Self-described as a “family-friendly urban axe throwing experience,” they are open seven days a week.
Throw Out Those Nerves!
The idea of hurling a hatchet through the air at a wooden target may seem reckless at first, but this recreational sport is growing in popularity across the country. On their website, Alley Cats Axe Throwing Co. assures guests that it is, in fact, a perfectly safe and fun activity for family members ages 13 and up.
Again, if the idea of a wooden-handled sharp-edge axe sailing through the air makes you nervous, rest easy. There are “axe-perts” who are designated coaches that give axe throwing lessons and ensure participants follow the safety guidelines. No experience is necessary, and they suggest you think of it like throwing darts.
They do have an area for the younger kids set up with activities like a coloring contest and Velcro axe throwing.
Get to Know the Owners
Alley Cats Axe Throwing Co. is owned by Wade and Ramona Wicht. According to The Pine Belt News, they are both professional counselors and owners of The Cornerstone Group. After Ramona’s “redneck brother from Indiana” jokingly suggested the couple open a local axe throwing bar since he and his sons loved doing it together up North, they looked into the emerging hobby and thought Hattiesburg might just be “cool” enough to embrace it.
As luck would have, the perfect space was available, and the couple purchased the property located at 220 W. Pine St. The space used to belong to Wade’s father, so it was extra special for him to renovate it, and the couple was happy to save much of the nostalgic charm of the building that once housed his father’s law firm.
One of the main ideas behind Alley Cats Axe Throwing Co. was to act as a downtown attraction. That’s why they share menus from the surrounding restaurants. They encourage their guests to order pick up or bring it with them before coming to throw axes. They do have a bar with cold craft beer and Coke on tap along with a selection of premium bottled beverages and bar snacks.
